Sonafield:
Operations of the Unseen
Sonafields Operations of the Unseen is a decent stab at alternative rock, the kind of which you might hear on a radio station that specializes in alternative rock playlists. In the forefront of the recording is the vocals of the lead singer, which seem to be tailored in that Eddie Vedder>Seven Mary Three>Incubus sort of growl that everyone is familiar with. In some ways the familiarity of this style of vocals will either make or break the band for you. If you go to sleep at night dreaming of a Days of the New reunion and comeback tour, youd probably do well picking up this Sonafield disc to help pass the time. If alternative tonalities arent your cup of tea, however, Sonafield might not be part of a well-balanced breakfast. After a couple of listens though, there appear to be some pleasant elements at play on the release. The guitar is well-played and catchy, melodic and professional sounding. Although I cringed at some of the lyrics on The Drowning and Melody for Freedom, I found a few songs that seemed to hold up pretty well, particularly Never Tried and Washed Away. The album is well-crafted overall, and there was obviously a lot of effort put into this release. My only confusion when I hear albums like this is that I wonder what a band is trying to accomplish by jumping into a musical genre already overflowing with second-rate talent. To be fair, Sonafield may have its eyes on becoming a first-rate alternative band someday, and if theres still a huge market for that stuff, theres no reason they cant go for it. The albums last track, Perfect Love, has some really nice gentle guitar interludes. Maybe Vertical Horizon should watch their back.
