Sonic Orange: Self-Titled EP
You know the saying about the Velvet Underground? How not very many people bought their first record when it was initially released, but those that did all went on to form rock bands? Well, it looks like the same thing is shaping up to be said about Weezer, except that lots of people bought their first record, not all of them went on to form bands, and a lot of those bands that did form completely missed the point. This four-song EP from Sonic Orange is a pleasant enough disc. Unfortunately, pleasant is never really a good word to use when describing rock music. Of these four songs, three of them are straight out of the current pop/rock mold crunchy guitars, bouncy rhythms, and slightly ironic lyrics are all in full effect. These songs were written by Steve Chang, who handles bass and background vocals. The third track, A Far From You, is a mostly acoustic number penned by Ollie Moore Jr., lead singer and guitar player who pretentiously refers to himself only as O. His vocals are kind of boring overall, and he sings the songs with as little passion as possible. The melodies are almost nonexistent. The playing on the record is very solid, but when the songs arent very good, you cant expect the music to make up for it. Sonic Oranges press kit goes on and on about how theyre going to save the world from cookie cutter music and blah blah blah, but then they give us an EP thats just more of the same. Its a shame really, because the Strokes just dont cut it as world-savers, and theres only so much Bono can do, yknow?
