Sprawl: Sarah Veladora
Never trust a band that invents its own word to describe its sound. Yes, were so different from anything youve ever heard that we cannot be held within the confines of existing language. We will invent our own genre, because we can not possibly fit into any other musical genre thats been established thus far. And so, dear reader, I give you Sprawl. Theyre from Canada. They play songcore. What is songcore you ask? Sit down and I will tell you. Actually, Ill just quote the band bio: ...letting particular songs speak in the language that they wanted to speak in... blah blah blah, whatever. So lets cut the bullshit for a moment. Sprawl plays modern rock. Or you could call it alternative rock. Either way describes the band perfectly no need to invent a genre. Theyre from Canada though, so maybe modern rock hasnt actually reached that far north yet... Ok, so Sprawl doesnt sound as original as they think they do. However, they do sound good. In fact, I probably wouldnt have had any complaints about them if they had skipped sending me their bio. Im a let-the-music-do-the-talking kind of guy, and I dont like being spoon-fed promotional pudding. The songs are well-written, and the production is excellent (they produce themselves in their own studio, and I can respect that). They get a lot of really great guitar sounds, and the drums rock. Ralph, the singer (how many rock singers named Ralph do you know?), has a unique voice which somehow reminds me of British glam-rock (which is a good thing). Ten catchy pop songs, clocking in at just over thirty-six minutes. Oh, and theyre from Canada. Some of my favorites are Get Off (mainly because of the line about Motley Crue) and Star in the Basement. If nothing else, these guys know how to write a hook. Did I mention theyre from Canada? I dont believe in songcore, but I do believe that Sprawl is pretty good. I also believe in swordfish.
