Often Lie
Statistics Often Lie is much more than just a great one-line band name and album title. This band essentially is Denver Dalley and friends, and their latest album appears to gently explore that strange place humans inhabit right after breaking up with a partner. As we all know, communication is one of the keys to any successful relationship, but this particular project chronicles the breakdown of that extremely essential pairing element. The whole crumbling begins with Final Broadcast, which puts human interaction into the impersonal vernacular of the radio business. Furthermore, with By(e) Now and At The End, Dalley sings about the inescapable ineffectiveness of phone conversation. Dalley, who is also a member of Desaparecidos, sings his songs in a subdued and breathy tone. He mostly supports himself with gentle guitar rock, although Say You Will takes on a slightly disjointed Strokes flavor, while Begging to Be Heard features nicely twanging six-string work. Except for the upfront drumming driving 10.22, percussion mostly takes a secondary role here. Its true that statistics often lie. But this album mainly avoids the facts. Instead, Denver Dalley focuses on feelings. And while emotions can be equally if not even more deceptive, its still the territory Dalley knows best and the inner region he clearly wants to explore. About the only sure fact here is that Denver Dalley is obviously in a lot of pain. And thats the truth.
