Stereosoul: Self-Titled
[self-released]

StereoSoul isn't so much about soul as it is about power pop, but no matter.  This New Jersey band of four has a fresh enough approach to honoring the past (the 80s and early 90s), that it deserves attention.  Catchy, original tunes such as "Mary Stuyvesant" and "Wish You Were Here" could fit on any Adult Alternative radio station, which, come to think of it, might offend visitors to this site who yearn for music that should have enough edge to remain left off the dial.  There's edge here, but the kind of edge that makes one think of Weezera popular juxtaposition for this band or even the Ramones.

But speaking of the Ramones, as original to the genre as StereoSoul is, my only reservation is for what Ill call the band's "novelty songs" such as "Internet Life Sucks" and "(I'm in Love with a) Porno Star."  Although rock legends like the Ramones can dish out such tunes, get away with it, and even make them memorable rock standards, I have trouble accepting songs along the lines of "<enter noun here> sucks" from anyone else, which I suppose says a lot about the Ramones.

Listen to "Victims of Capitalism" and "101 Things" from this release and you get a good idea of StereoSoul's strengthsoriginal melodies and harmonies that are catchy enough to seem familiar, good guitar work, and enough creative energy to make the song remind you of a genre, but from an entirely different angle.  A respectable release from a band that gives the impression their creativity is not yet out of steam.
