Superhopper: Does This Sound Exciting Yet?
[Guilt Ridden Pop]

Does This Sound Exiting Yet? is the answer to the same question it poses, but the album leaves the listener wondering what to expect next from these St. Paul rockers. While they do a fine job of blending mid-1990's alt-rock with 1977-style guitar riffs, this album is confusing in terms of assigning it a specific genre. This is surely a tactic these rockers use to balance their intelligence with their desire to let themselves go completely mad on their instruments. The album's inspirations are mysterious at times but blatantly obvious elsewhere, especially during the untitled track before the album closer, "What It Takes." Both tracks are indeed splendid, because they offer a tender finish to an album that unapologetically blisters the listener's ears in just under 29 minutes. The other ten tracks on the album seem to have that classic "instant hit" feel to them. Its not that the record's formula is tired or overdone, but the feeling you get upon hearing it is that it's too good to be true. The hard-driving tracks "Something Real Cool" and "Backslash Wall" are reminiscent of late era Buzzcocks, or perhaps even the Richmond Sluts at their not-so-grittiest. The standout track on Does this Sound Exciting Yet? is "New Fresh Midwest" simply because it represents the new trend in the Midwestern states of the U.S., which is to rock unimaginably hard. This album achieves a sonic benchmark with its originality and ability to remain fluid when so many different styles are amalgamated. The record is easily a good sign for the future of Minnesotan rock, which we all feared reached its heyday with Husker Du and the Replacements. It's good to know we were wrong about that.
