The Tall Boy: Effect
[self-released]

If youre a twee-popper, heres a little treat for you.  The Tall Boy is a band thats currently unsigned, but they forwarded us a nice CD-R of their album Effect.  These Scots from Glasgow have come up with a fine release here, and its almost too easy to lump them in with Belle and Sebastian when you hear their songs.  I mean Scottish accent, introspective lyrics, acoustic guitar hooks the comparisons a no-brainer.

Windows of the West is a nice song with some finely plucked guitar inserted over an already catchy track.  I also like the squirrelly electric guitar on We Could Be Friends.  Lots of different instruments seem to pop up on different tracks, and a few like One Last Glass and Runaway use a bit of drum machine and other technological things.  The songwriter generally faces a bit of danger when writing lounge-y pop music like this, because the lyrics have to stand front and center amidst the timid musical background.  I only hear The Tall Boy lose their edge a few times on this release, and its usually associated with some awkward lyrics.  Take the song Leave Me Now as an example; the music is just too gentle to back up lines like Its killing me, put me out of my misery, and leave me now.

Still, the fourteen tracks on Effect show a great deal of promise, and I really enjoy the bands knack for writing good pop hooks.  As for suggesting this band to others, it really is a matter of taste.  If you dig Belle and Sebastian, youll probably find a great deal to like on this album.  On the other hand, if you think that Belle and Sebastian are a bunch of whiny twerps that could use a good thrashing, I dont think youll be joining The Tall Boys teenage fanclub anytime soon.
