They Walk in Line: Medical Necessities
[Sixthman]

They Walk in Line bring a little sleaze, some great melodies, and a lot of rock to the table. Their first full length, Medical Necessities is a solid collection of desperate and deadly rock n roll tunes. This L.A.-based band has had some success in the past with their previous two EPs, but Medical Necessities is bound to bring the band the attention they deserve.

I was blown away right from the start with the first track, Revenge. The tone of the guitar combined with the opening chord progression is to die for; a nice balance of clean guitar flitting with distortion and then come the biting lyrics: Ive had a flu, wont look for a cure, Ill languish inside my sickness/ And spread this disease, on my enemies, to settle a vicious weakness, and things only get better from there. One wont be able to help but sing along with the ending chorus that repeats, Will you follow, or will you fuck up everything?

The first single from the album is Heart Attack at 5 AM. The bands front man Michael Romero says the song was conceived during a period when I found a difficulty being hopeful while otherwise struggling to put the pieces together, referring to some withering personal relationships. This song is a wise choice for the first single, but its not the only college rock radio friendly hit.

The track Sonic Tremble has Romero getting a little more baritone, sounding a bit like Nick Cave crossed with Mark Lanegan on one of the albums more somber tunes. The next track, Slightly Fallen, is a sonic rocker with a sound that reflects one of the bands influences, Sonic Youth. Another triumph is Miles of Failure, with a Cracker meets Mazzy Starr hook. Heres the thing: each song on this album is a little gem. They all sound different but hold together as one piece through the mood they create on this impressive album.

So, why seek out this release? How about the great guitar work that reflects players like the Pixies Joey Santiago (Medical Necessities) and the VUs Sterling Morrison (Could I Have a Feeling So Warm), some incredibly catchy, clever lyrics, the jangled guitars, and all of its held together with a tight rhythm section; thats why. Also, dig the cover artwork by Jade Howell.
