Times Ten: Our Love is Amplified

When I was in college, I was in a band.  We used to practice in the drummers parents garage.  It was a lot of fun, especially since we were oblivious to how bad we were.  Every time we practiced, we would record the session on a cheap boombox.  We had boombox placement down to a science, finding exactly the right spot so you could hear everything clearly.  Sure, nothing sounded good, but at least you could hear everything.  This CD sounds a lot like some of our best boombox recordings, except for the fact that my band sucked.

Yeah, the recording is bad.  The guitar and bass are heavily distorted.  Sometimes theyre so distorted that its hard to tell them apart.  Whether its the result of intentional distortion or just bad production remains to be seen.  The drums are there mostly you just hear cymbals and snare.  The one thing that does stand out in the mix is Sarahs vocals, which makes it all worth it.  Her voice gives personality to the songs and a reason to keep listening.  I would say that her vocals are sassy but it uses that word in the band bio, and I hate quoting band bios, so Ill say that her vocals are spunky.  Besides, nobody says spunky anymore.  As far as lyrics go, I cant decipher all of them, but what I can make out is good.  Is TLC about interior decorating?  It might be.  If so, interior decorating never sounded so good.

This CD has 6 songs, all between 1 and 2 minutes long.  The entire CD is 9 minutes long.  That works out to an average of 1.5 minutes per song.  Lets say the average album is 45 minutes.  That means Times Ten needs approximately 30 songs for a full length album.  Thats a lot of songs, so keep writing.  As you might have guessed, the songs are short, dirty rock numbers that end abruptly before you have the chance to get tired of them.  You might be able to get away with calling it punk.

When its all said and done, I liked this disc, but I hated the recording.  Its not very hard nowadays to make a quality-sounding CD without spending a ton of money.  If Times Ten puts out a properly produced CD, theyll do some serious damage.
