Tom Thumb:
...Songs from Holiday
Songs from Holiday is a quiet yet appealing record. Tom Thumb, a solo artist from Providence, Rhode Island, essentially plays solo acoustic guitar with a number of subtle percussion flourishes. Fortunately, he is a good musician, and the music is far more interesting than the acoustic riffing provided by some artists. The lyrics are appealing in spots as well, which makes the comparisons to Iron & Wine and Wilco no too far-fetched. A song such as Flagellites, despite its odd title and unexplained chants of L.S.M.F.T., certainly has some heartfelt, introspective lyrics, but the tone set by the music is good enough to keep the fragile song well above water. Not every song is this appealing. Weary Traveler sounds as though it was recorded with about five minutes of thought after coming home drunk at 3 am in the morning. I suppose the experimental approach on the track is alright, but I cant imagine too many fans getting excited about hearing a track like this. Tom Thumb displays some good skills here, but Id suggest more focus on songwriting until more convincing tracks like Times Arrow and Motel in Phoenix emerge to fill up a full album.
