Transcendence: Nothing Is Cohesive
[TMG]

While they havent managed to transcend any form of modern music, Transcendence has found themselves a nice little niche in the world of retro glam and dream pop. I guess transcending modern society has spit them out on the other side of the 80s, where theyve discovered a more suitable home. While I dont want to say that I didnt like this album because it is pretty solid it comes across as a little weak at times. Its one of those albums that you describe as on the right track, but the next album will probably be the one, after theyve figured out some hookier choruses. Nothing is Cohesive is remarkably well recorded and well done, but its hard to say if Ill pick it back up in the next few months.

The cool thing about this release is that it has the good old feel of some Marc Bolan and Elton John 70s glam rock mixed with some slower balladry, which isnt as good as the rockier stuff but still pretty notable. Theres a cover of Paul & Linda McCartneys Tomorrow, which is actually amazingly pretty and endearing. I think Id even go so far as to say that this one track makes the whole album worth it.

Hale has the perfect voice for the music that accompanies him and the right lyrics as well mostly musings on love or the thought of it and music itself. He penned a touching love song celebrating Brazilian pop songster Caetano Veloso, so his heart is knowingly in the music.

I think Ill renege my previous statement about whether or not I would pick this up in a few months; there are definitely some strong tracks that would work very nicely on a mix or two, but listening to fifteen tracks of the album all at once was a bit tedious. Transcendence is going for that timeless rock sound, which they are extremely close to; but its still just a little out of reach. And again, I will reiterate: while theyre not quite there yet, this album is growing on me and I give Hale & co. one more album to nail it down.

Obvious influences include, in addition to Bolan and Elton, Bowie and Eno. So I think you see what kind of sound were going for here. Download a track and give it a spin; see what it does for you, and itll probably end up growing on you.
