Finally, a tribute album for a band worthy of the honor. This is an aptly timed release, as Axl Rose is doing everything in his power to desecrate the good name Guns N' Roses made for themselves in the 1980's. In a time where down is up and bad is good, we NEED this album to restore sanity among us. While there is the omission of A.F.I.'s cover version of "My Michelle," The Dillinger Escape Plan offers a more than compensating rendition of the tale that Axl told to the world almost 20 years ago. (Besides, there is already a tribute album for A.F.I., nevermind that they are still together and have just only begun to seep into the mainstream in the past few years.) Nevertheless, some top names are featured on this compilation: Death by Stereo and Most Precious Blood some of the big names with even bigger sounds represented here. Surprisingly, God Forbid delivers a splendid performance of "Out to Get Me" that is miles away from their traditionally metal approach. In addition, everyone knows Axl had a soft spot in his heart for Elton John and Freddy Mercury, so we were all kind of shocked when we found out he was a big fat gay-basher. Still, though, Axl had some wussy tendencies, so we got more than our fair share of ballads along the years. This holds true with this compilation as Vaux and The Beautiful Mistake wear their hearts on their sleeve tattoos with "14 Years" and "I Used to Love Her," respectively. Even though Axl wrote those songs, he still seemed kind of tough when he was sitting at that piano sulking away for Stephanie Seymore, but The Beautiful Mistake comes off as whiny, which is no surprise, really. All in all, you have to realize that what makes this compilation worthwhile is the fact that not every band on the record is doing their best impersonation of Axl. All of these outfits are giving respect where it is due, and they are doing it on their own terms, for which we should be grateful. The main point of this album is that you know everyone out there gives up the love to Guns N' Roses, but I think Brandon Scieppati is president of the fan club. As a member of both Eighteen Visions and Bleeding Through, he got to cover two songs for the tribute album. So, ok, there is someone out there who loves Guns N' Roses just a little bit more than I do. All I get to do is write about how great this compilation turned out.
