Troy Taroy:
Employee of the Month
Sometimes Im amazed at all the different music that people are making out there. For instance, take Troy Taroys sort of thick pop rock arrangements and vocal harmonies. But then match it up with lyrics about leaving a party for the need to eat a tamale. Does this situation occur often on the west coast? Is being weird the only way to put creative lyrics in a song and avoid rock n roll clichs? Well, maybe. Im not saying its easy to come up with novel themes for rock music nowadays, but the next song, Smooth Sailing, jumps into a description of eating hamburgers and singing the national anthem as an African lady. With all the work that went into the songs, I cant help but feel a bit confused about these subject matters. I guess Troy has fun making these songs, but his quirky sense of humor is probably likely to be lost on many listeners. Maybe if I knew the guy and knew some of his pets, I might understand why the fluffy, carrot-loving protagonist of The Bunny saved his life; but as things are, Im at a loss. Troy throws on a fake British accent for Policeman, which is quite amusing as a Kinks-like tale of suburban silliness, and Internal Bleeding mocks the Charades with lines like Listen to the rhythm of the falling puke. The song Borgnine comes close to evoking a serious mood at times, but Troys goofiness still shines through. Revealing lines like I dont really care about anything in the world should be taken note of, because Troy is quite happy doing his own little thing here, and unless you share his sense of humor, you may find yourself a bit confused about where hes coming from.
