True Swamp Neglect: Sleep Function Lost
[Superglider]

Sleep Function Lost, the new full-length album from UK-based True Swamp Neglect is a message to the people of the future saying _____.

It seems to me this album says a lot more than that.

Drawing on influences as varied as Pavement, The Beta Band, The Wedding Present, Weezer and American hip-hop (and thats just what I can hear) True Swamp Neglect delivers a resoundingly diverse yet entirely unassuming and coherent album. They are first and foremost musicians, and like all good musicians, they know what people want to hear and not just what sells. Guitar is king on this disc, and the lads use it well, giving the listener an impression of contemplation and innovation instead of chronic masturbation.

Their experimental songwriting draws you in, and their lyrics get you thinking. The songs pleasantly echo the days of 90s college rock without leaning too heavily on the guitar styles and rhythms of those bands. In Sleep Function Lost, True Swamp Neglect successfully melds many influences into something that sounds not only original but also authentic. There is no glossy veneer on this album. Rogue watch alarms bleep along happily on a few of the tracks. It is precisely this homegrown feeling that makes this album so appealing. Its always nice when a band doesnt produce their own humanity out of their material.
