The Vacation Gold: December 1972 EP
[Free Ride]

The Vacation Golds new December 1972 EP is a quick glimpse at a band working to hammer out its sound. The six tracks, while carrying a similar bond and not too far off from each other, range from boisterous and rollicking rock to spacey shuffles and on through to creepy, shimmery instrumentals. The common thread that holds all the pieces close together is a thick dance groove woven right through the middle of their brand of jagged, drug-addled rock.

Drag City, the first track, immediately brought to mind fellow scenesters The Dandy Warhols; while this might be a bad word to some, its not to me. Just to clarify, its a bit hazy, a bit dancey and nicely rattled. I Dont Mind (So Much) and Magazine (tracks two and four, respectively) are the boisterous rock numbers of the thick-lipped, arms-flailed rock bit variety, and well done at that. #629 (track three) breaks those numbers up as an upbeat, spacey shuffle, while track five, Suite 72 grounds us by means of a quivery, robotic instrumental. Stardust bookends the EP nicely, close to where we started as another bouncy rock anthem with a monstrous guitar lead strewn through the middle.

So, if youre a fan of space-glamish rock with a bit of a shuffle to it, this is for you. Its only six tracks long, so by no means a commitment, and worth the listen. Its definitely fun. Fuzzy, dancey and a bit wild, thisll be good live. Id check it out.
