Vaux:
Plague Music EP
Way back in the summer of 2002, I stumbled across a band named Vaux at a little side stage at Warped Tour. I was in a rundown Asbury Park parking lot about to drive out West, and I heard these guys were from the Boulder/Denver area. I think I caught the last couple of songs and introduced myself. Having been mildly impressed, I was mostly interested in finding out what type of musical environment to which I was about to exile myself. Sure they were no Vandals, Pennywise, Small Brown Bike or Damned, but like I said, I was a bit intrigued. Three years have floated by, and I have completely forgotten to wander on down to Denver to check these guys out. It took an Equal Vision released EP to re-spark my interest in these four guys. My roommate, who used to see them play years and years and years ago back in high school as Eiffel, was a bit concerned about the over-production; I, on the other hand, am quite happy with all this EP offers. The guitars are perfectly synched and drowning while every single instrument somehow remains clearly audible. Even though the EP does have a bit of a feel of production-heavy hardcore, each song has parts to it not just three or four chord fury. There are movements jumping from melodic, high-noted singing to head-splitting, cracked screaming, jerky guitar flails to smooth, more intricately picked dual interplay. The maddening double guitar work and harmonized full-throated vocals are definitely the standout points here; the vocal melodies are worthy of mention as well. On first listen, this might seem like the same old nu-screamo band, but I urge you to keep listening; this goes beyond lapsing into technical land Sunny Day regions and even Tool-ish landscapes. This EP is worth picking up.
