Vibrant Green: Artless Yet Excellent (EP) Vibrant
Greens music is representative of many of the various sounds that tend to get
collectively placed under the umbrella of indie rock.
The Greensboro, NC bands five-song EP, Artless Yet Excellent,
has a couple of punk/emo songs, a couple of dark, brooding songs, and one song
with Sonic Youth-like guitars. When
listening to your typical public or college radio station, it would not be
surprising to hear songs that sound very much like the ones youll hear on
this EP. Of
all these various dabblings in the realm of indie rock, the sound that seems to
work best for Vibrant Green is dark and brooding.
The discs standout track is the middle one, I Find You, a
chilling tune reminiscent in tone to some of the Cures darker stuff.
I Find You is beautifully mixed to accentuate its instrumentation
and vocals, which settle into the proper tone only after pushing dissonance to
its limits. The song ends with
singer Stephen Tunnell driving his voice up to a desperate wail. The forays into emo/punk
appear with Will You and Overrated, the latter having chord
progressions and howling vocals that reminded me of the Promise Ring.
Overrated also has a somewhat unnecessary and monotonous guitar
solo about two minutes in, but at the songs conclusion, theres a pretty
decent pop-punk breakdown. One of the best things about this EP is the way the playing of the individual band members melds together so nicely. Perhaps its because Vibrant Green is made up of three brothers, who for such a young band, seem unusually in tune with one anothers playing. Theyve managed to write the kind of songs that grow on you, making you want to play them over and over again until youre addicted. You can sign me up for the full-length.
