Volante:
Static Until Sunrise
Here we are with Volante, listening to their latest, Static until Sunrise. The band is comprised of Gabe Shapiro (vocals, bass, lyrics), Jon and Jeff Mitchell (guitar), and Josh Madson (drums). The band plays a very angular post-punk style, which sometimes gets your foot tapping and sometimes leaves you feeling confused. The recording is of very good quality, but the mixing is less then superb. The vocals are typically impossible to hear. In fact, I can scarcely make out any phrases at all. The songs all sound very similar, some might say too similar, which unfortunately makes the album very forgettable. That being said, track three, The Simple Lie, is the albums low point. Not only is it repetitive, one guitar plays the same note over and over for a minute and 30 seconds. Even though other things are building, that one note makes me want to rip the headphones off my head and blow them away with a shotgun. Then, when the vocals come in, they are very difficult to understand. In fact, all I can really make out is its alright which doesnt reveal much about the songs meaning. The high point of the album comes directly after the previous track, Clocks and Watches. The song is less frustrating to listen to the vocals are much more clear, it isnt too repetitive, and it has very nice production and dynamics. In conclusion, although they display an obvious talent, I think this recording doesnt do Volante justice. On a night when you are in the mood for listening to music that requires attention and the sound guy has the vocals at an audible level, Volante would likely bring the house down. This album, however, has done little more than frustrate me.
