Waking State: Self-Titled EP

The official Waking State bio (as official bios usually do) tells us what the band considers to be its two most positive attributes: strong live shows and a varied, stylistic background, ranging from, well, they claim almost everything, which creates somethingincredibly bold and new.

While I dont think that Waking States demo will particularly produce any waves in the vast ocean of progressive rock, I will give them credit for constructing each of the four songs on this demo with a slightly different niche of modern rock in mind.   The first two songs are darker and heavier Kill, is reminiscent of early Red Hot Chili Peppers, and the second, Driving to Work, reminds me of a Stone Temple Pilots grunge-era ballad.  These two are very moody, using a little too many guitar and vocal effects for my liking, but nevertheless, are decently constructed.

Fortunately, the style of the third and forth songs, Again and Problematic Prophet, took a turn for the better.  These two songs are minus the superfluous effects, start off with catchy riffs, and even possess a sincere pop sound akin to acts like the Gin Blossoms.  Again, by far the best song on the demo, is musically put together, and unlike the first two songs, allows us to hear Waking States ability to arrange tight melodic vocals.

Its my guess that Waking States live performance is closer to the sound of the latter two songs, if anything, because of the difficulty of reproducing all the doctored up Radiohead-like vocals and guitar effects of the first two.   Nevertheless, Waking State does a decent job at combining their various styles into the studio album format Id definitely catch a show to see if the live performance is all its cracked up to be.
