The Warlocks at King Tuts Wah Wah Hut in Glasgow, Scotland - 10/17/03

The Warlocks

Druggy music for druggy people promised the Tuts leaflet.

Debut album Phoenix promised much as well, and there was a definite air of expectation in Glasgows finest small venue.

Hey they look like the Velvets with maybe a Dandy Warhols nod is that totally New York? Well Shake the Dope Out is the finest Velvets takeoff since the last one, and tonight its the best example of the Warlocks giving you something special. It prompts some steaming punter into lofting his pint into the air very generous and this is the point where you think a gig just might live up to its hype.

Hurricane Heart Attack, with its trademark three-guitar assault, kicks proverbial butt too even when one particularly fucked-up-looking guitarist looks in danger of falling over.

But thats rocknroll, and the basic rocknroll side of the Warlocks is fine.

What isnt fine tonight, anyway is the quality of their slower drone-epics that owe as much to Spacemen 3/Spiritualized as Lou.

Cosmic Let Down says it all. A stand out on Phoenix, it could have been what was promised earlier. Instead they deliver a tame, relatively quick version that just doesnt click. Too many other numbers seem rushed. Sure, the slowies build nicely enough, and the keyboards add an extra layer to those neat guitars. But just when you expect the real good part to kick in, the tracks generally grind to a tired halt.

Maybe the six on stage are at the end of a gruelling schedule, but Jason Spaceman himself would look hyper next to these guys. At least get some soul into it.

The majority of the druggy people here tonight seemed happy mind you, but whatever they were indulging in (alcohol?), it gave them more energy.

Knackered music for drunken people, Not quite as catchy as the Tuts leaflet but maybe more appropriate.
