We Are Childhood Equals: This Is What You Asked For (EP)
[Pop Faction]

First of all, I feel the need to mention that I am rarely a fan of EPs. For the most part, they rarely seem to get enough said musically. But, I will review what I have, and what I have is This is What You Asked For by We Are Childhood Equals.

This CD and I have developed a love/hate relationship: at times it evokes the perfect feeling as I sit at the computer waiting for something to happen, but when I do more active listening, I find myself a little bit bored. While that isn't exactly a bad thing (I love tons of mellow bands), This Is What You Asked For comes very close to being rockin' enough to captivate me. Something just seems to be missing in the energy department, and it causes the EP to come off as a bit sterile. That still doesn't make this a bad disc. The songs (which all sound very similar) have pretty cool parts, and while not exactly intricate or impressive, they work very well together and provide a good foundation for the singer. It sounds like the music was made to fit his voice exactly or visa versa, and the recording is fantastic: the pan effects are perfect - just enough so that it sounds amazing in headphones, without being too harsh. The last song on the EP is easily the best; the opening riff sounds slightly Radiohead-ish (a la Paranoid Android), and the ending is fuzzy and upbeat.

Let's recap, shall we? The pros: great mix, cool voice, decent songs. The cons: a little sterile sounding and similar sounding songs. Overall? I think this is a decent EP, definitely worth spending a few bucks on. I'd be very interested to see We Are Childhood Equals (I like the band name a lot by the way) live, or hear a full-length where they could explore a little more.
