Wes McDonald: The Guest
[Skybucket]

Admittedly, I felt concerned when I first tossed this disc into my stereo.  Im sure most of you realize there is a definite musical influence that can be brought on by the region in which you were reared.  My growing up on the West Coast left me skeptical of Wes McDonalds ability to fulfill my instrumental desires.  Happily, it turns out that Wes McDonalds new album, The Guest, has both dispelled my skepticism and has opened a door in my life.  He has introduced to me a new fondness for the realm of alternative Southern Rock.

Wes McDonald has successfully produced his third album, this one on Skybucket Records.  Its a solid compilation, leaving very little to be desired.  A ringing bell opens the album, and you are struck by the instant appeal of McDonalds energetic acoustic guitar.

Coat of Armor is a high energy piece.  Wild guitar scales, rockin drums, and a deep gritty voice dominate the song.  Youll have slipped on your trucker hat and be tapping your toes before the song is over.  But truthfully, its not until Pirate Fish that McDonald really throws out a great song.  And from there, theres no stopping the flow of the album.  Yeah I Did is an amusing piece showcasing some of the cutting, no BS lyrics that dominate every song.  McDonald exhibits a sharply clever, comedic talent that is not seen from very many artists these days.

Wess gritty voice does not have a very wide vocal range, but the cleverness of his lyrics and the potent energy pulsing throughout the album take care of any vocal shortcomings.  There is a point midway through the album when Wes begins to play songs in keys that are more forgiving of his vocal range.

From slower pieces to the truly rockin, McDonald does not fail to please and surprise.  This is a man who sounds like he truly loves his work.  Judging from his straight from the hip lyrics, hed be a damn good drinkin buddy.  So for those of you out there whove been looking for some new alternative Southern rock, this is a guy you should check out.  I recommend you pick up this album, drag your nastiest sofa out to the porch, crack open a cool Coors 16-ouncer and enjoy The Guest.
