Wolf Colonel/Jason Anderson: Something Everything!

At first glance, Wolf Colonel appears to be another of those increasingly popular band that is really just one guy bands which, dont get me wrong, is a lot better than being a the heres the lead singers name band band.  In this case, Wolf Colonel is the alias of Jason Anderson, and since there is no specific musician info with the disc, I will just assume that he performed everything himself.

Something/Everything! has already become one of the best discs Ive heard this year.  Throughout the fourteen tracks on the album, Anderson jumps from jangly power pop to acoustic strummy songs and back without ever losing the overall feel of the disc.  Even though they were recorded in a variety of ways with a number of producers, the songs feel like they were meant to be together.  After the first five tracks lull you into a false sense of knowing-what-comes-next, Citizens Arrest kicks in with its fuzzy drum machines, wall of feedback, and organ you might think its a lost Kid A track if not for the fact that you can understand what Andersons singing.  Its lo-fi enough to be hip, but theres just enough fancy schmancy stuff in there to ensure its not too hip.

My personal favorites are From Wisconsin, which reminds me of Neutral Milk Hotel, and Jet Ski Accidents, where Anderson asks a most important question: do you like Grant Harts songs?  Do you like Bob Moulds songs?  Something really nice emerges in nearly every track on the disc.  Theres a great stream of conscious quality to many of the lyrics as if he was making them up in front of the microphone, yet some of the lines are just too good to believe that.  According to the press sheet, Anderson wrote and recorded over 100 songs for this album Id like to request a 69 Love Songs style box, please.

Overall, this is a great disc that doesnt get caught up in itself all you need to know is that Jason Anderson writes really nice songs.  If you like songwriters with their tongues in cheeks and their hearts on sleeves, then this is for you.
