Wydown: Message from the Yes Man EP
[self-released]

With a 70s rock bank twist, Wydown has released Message from the Yes Man.  This new EP has a variety of tracks that draw upon styles such as that of Queen but with a more contemporary style; yet the overall result is ineffective and uninteresting, and I could imagine few people who will find any connection with the music.  Wydown has its hopeful moments, but too frequently they falter with weak lyrics and too many candy-pop rhythms.  I suppose there are redeeming qualities, but its only going to be the very gracious audience that will find them.

The opening track In a Sound opens with a hopeful riff, but the listener is quickly disappointed by the soft, sad sap vocals.  The overall feel is a lack of power, energy, or interest.  The anthem-filled guitar riffs become tiresome and often irritating.   In other tracks, Wydown tries to experiment beyond the standard vocals but falls flat.  Plan on No Plan incorporates distracting yells and inhuman chirps that are more comedic than anything.  Caught a little off guard, I actually laughed out loud.

The band displays a general level of weakness that doesnt strike well with me.  There may be some hope that they will find a way to play with more power and more confident delivery once they move past Message From the Yes Man.  But for now, Wydown leaves us with little redeeming to grab on to.
