Various Artists: Yes New York Compilation
[Wolfgang Morden]

Yes New York, released June 3, is the 2003 model of the 1978 release, No New York, a compilation that placed emphasis on local New York no wave acts and was produced by the legendary Brian Eno.

This compilation has 16 tracks, which for the most part are rockin.  It starts out with the media-declared, New York It band, The Strokes.  I realize I am in the minority by pooh-poohing The Strokes as an unoriginal, uninspiring machination, but I have come to terms with that.  Their controversial single New York City Cops is the choice cut here, being a live version from a show in Iceland.  I have read many articles that practically tout this as the reason to buy this compilation, because this particular song was never released in the States.  I say, lets face it, if The Strokes get you that hot, you already own the single and this is simply a way to get attention focused on the compilation.

So, if my theory is true, I hope it works and people do buy this compilation simply because there are several damn fine bands on this release, my favorite being The Rogers Sisters.  Could Zero Point be any more kick ass? I doubt it, but I wouldnt put it past this trio from Brooklyn.  I got the chance to catch them live recently and they represent incredibly well, enough to make me wish they had a live record.  Go see them play!

Then there are several other mentionable acts. Radio 4 makes you feel high when they sing Save Your City.  Ted Leo and the Pharmacists speak their minds on Ballad of a Sin Eater.  Calla takes it down, way down, on an excellent tune titled Strangler, and The Rapture follow up with Olio.  I have read so much about this band The Rapture and had yet to hear any of their songs. My list of CDs to buy gets lengthier by the minute listening to this compilation.  The Rapture sounds great, and I am definitely jazzed about making them one of my very next purchases.

A fan of Le Tigre from inception, I dig this crazy disco remix of their track Deceptacon.  It was remixed by DFA, some sort of producers of the New York dance-rock sound.  Note to self, add DFA to list of CDs to buy.

Closing out the New York lineup is Unitard.  Unitard is really the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.  Unitard, YYY, same difference.  I am down with the YYY and I can appreciate this acoustic version of Our Time entitled here as Year To Be Hated.  I really dont know what the deal with Unitard is, an alter-ego band, the acoustic mirror image the YYY without the chaos? Either way you take them, theyll still blow you away.

Proceeds from the sale of Yes New York will go to benefit Musicians On Call.  MOC is a non-profit organization whose mission is to use music to complement the healing process for patients in healthcare facilities through bedside performances, CD pharmacies, project playback, and ticket donations.
