The Yum Yum Tree: Reverse Engines
Andy Gish, the driving force behind the Atlanta-based band the Yum Yum Tree is a woman with expectations. The album insert features a picture of a young Gish sporting a guitar half her size. This is a woman who has been making music most of her life. All of her years of insights, mistakes, and evolving style have culminated in the Yum Yum Trees newest full-length release Reverse Engines. Catchy guitar lines and poppy lyrics make this sugary release easy to listen to and a safe choice for many mainstream rock stations, including the groups local station, Album 88. The slower, darker tracks are pervaded with an air of mystery, produced by Andy Gishs low, breathy voice. Her singing is reminiscent of Luscious Jackson and Holes Courtney Love. While the lyrics are of the unfortunately standard and simplistic teen-angst fare, Gish does seem to have potential for songwriting. As it stands, the album is nice without being challenging. The group seems content to stay within the lines of conventional glam-rock and pop without building something new. It works for them. Theyre a very popular local band in Atlanta. But its been done. Judging by this release I think they are capable of innovation or at least extrapolation, maybe a new interpretation of old genres. But first theyll have to take that next step into uncertain, but certainly more interesting territory.
