Zox: The
Wait
Upon initial exposure, it may seem like Zox are throwing the most formulaic would-be rock possible your way. If this is the case, try to pin down the formula. Listen to the up-tempo reggae guitar hook at the beginning of the opening track Carolyn. Doesnt it sound like theyre channeling the horde of American reggae bands that polluted the airwaves after Brad Nowell overdosed? Listen again. Isnt that guitar line a little too crisp, a little too post-punk for neo-reggae? And the lyrics: the melancholy, hopeful romantic beat musings of a New England twenty-something. Dont those belong in some pop-punk band? And what about that pretty electric violin? Whats up with that? The truth is that Zox will sound immediately familiar, but it may take a moment for you to realize that they remind you of many things. You wont find anything overly aggressive here, nor will you find something simple or predictable. The Wait is a testament to how hard these guys have worked to create a concoction of sounds with widespread appeal while maintaining complete creative control. Its easy to see why their hometown of Providence is so proud.
