Zug Island:
3:33
Upon first listen, Zug Islands sophomore effort 3:33 is terribly generic hard rock. Then you listen to it a few more times and it grows even more mundane. The vocals are feeble and especially wavering on the atypical ballad track Feel. Zug Island are devout followers of Insane Clown Posse and on rare occasions on this record, that is apparent. That is not a good thing either way you look at it, because I am of the opinion that Insane Clown Posse is a hateful gang of ignorant boys. Zug Island does try and move away from any comparison to ICP by not being a rap metal band. Instead, they opt for the doom and gloom of mediocre hard rock. This band missed the only boat they might have jumped on, which was to college radio, the only place these guys might have managed a small audience. That might even be too complimentary. Zug Island, named after a poisonous factory site in their hometown of Detroit, claim that their sound is toxic rock, gritty and infectious that will reach deep into your soul. Wow, that is an incredibly promising description that this band comes nowhere near fulfilling. This album is scattered in ideas and the lyrics are humdrum: live, die, move on, etc. Zug Island has opened, or should I say claims to have opened, for some impressive artists, impressive because they lack the talent required to back any of these acts. Henry Rollins, Auf de Maur, Evanescence? Who books these shows? Their press release regales us in the bands decision to go with Psychopathic Records (ICPs label) when they released their first album and subsequently this album. They felt their image and music would best be handled by an independent label that could take [them] to the next level. I think that is insulting to aspiring musicians everywhere. Musicians who know how to market themselves and find their own success, rather than waiting for your clown-makeup wearing mentors to take a break from degrading the masses and coddle you for all youre not worth. My question is who would have signed these guys if ICP hadnt stepped in? The answer is blindingly clear once you hear the first track of this album.
