The Zutons at The Troubadour in West Hollywood, CA - 2/10/05

The Zutons

The Zutons played a stellar show in Los Angeles on February 10th, and with Morrissey in attendance, they made their case as one of the best live acts in modern rock.  With a vibrant (and downright bouncy) set, the band wowed a crowd of ranging demographics with an inspired catalog of songs, including the various hits and fan-favorites of their dynamic debut, Who Killed...the Zutons.  Rock, funk, country, Southern boogie and Rubber Soul all vie for position in the bands repertoire, and they carry the load with the ease and fortitude of a steaming locomotive.

Songs like You Will, You Wont and Dont Ever Think (the best game show theme song waiting to happen) proved undeniable, and with affable command, Dave McCabe showed why hes become one of the best songwriters in the business, pairing the wild imagery of his words with the dense, multilingual speak of his bands sound.  But hes not the groups only star.  Saxophonist Abi Harding drew the biggest cheers of the night, and it most likely had nothing to do with what a babe she is.

Highlights were in abundance, but so were some rather transcendent moments provided by the band moments perhaps taken for granted when enjoyed at home, but here on stage, they were in full bloom (the zigzagging guitar solo on Pressure Point, the tension and release of Long Time Coming, the sympathetic sax lines of Confusion all magical).  These guys are fun, and hey, wouldnt you know it? You can dance to their music!  And judging by the front row, your mom can too.
