xpo8odx: This Is xpo8odx

This great CD is the creation of former Rove front man Christopher Davis.  Under the name of xpo8odx, he’s created an album that is the epitome of home multi-track recording.  Throughout the disc’s ten tracks, sounds weave in and out, and while the songs are titled and are split apart from one another, the whole thing could be seen as one continuous track.

Once the first song “traLaLa” kicks in, you pretty much know what to expect from the album.  While the basis of each song is his guitar and vocals, there are also drum machine tracks, keyboards, and other odds and ends mixed into each track to make it more interesting.  Davis’ delivery on many of the songs reminds me of the Talking Heads, and most of the lyrics tend to be of stream-of-consciousness variety (particularly “Stupid People” and “Mercedes Driving Mademoiselle.”  His vocals are treated as another instrument to build the sound-scapes, not to relay poetic lyrics.

The album uses multi-tracking to great effect, as Davis harmonizes with himself, and builds up guitar track after guitar track only to pull them all away to shift the dynamic of a track.  He looks like he’s a master at using the tape recorder as an instrument unto itself, and sound falls exactly where it’s supposed to.  Sometimes, this sort of thing could end up looking like nothing more than someone jerking around on a tape deck, but xpo8odx creates interesting collages of sound, and the album never gets boring.

All in all, this is a highly recommended disc that would definitely appeal to fans of Neutral Milk Hotel or Olivia Tremor Control (or any of the Elephant 6 bands, actually).  It might be a little hard to find, but it’s definitely worth the effort to track down a copy.
